- Leaning Tower of Pisa
The leaning tower of Pisa is one of Italy's most famous monuments one of the most remarkable bell towers in Europe. Its construction began in August 1173 and continued for over 200 years. The original architect still remains unknown.
In the past people thought the tower's inclination was actually part of the design. But why would anyone design a bell tower that looked like it was going to topple over?
Nowadays, we know that the tower was initially designed to be "vertical". It started to lean sideways during the 200 or so years of construction. Most people will agree that with or without the curious inclination, it's still one of the most beautiful bell towers in Europe.
Over the years there have been many attempts to halt the inclination of the tower. Damaged columns and other parts have been replaced on numerous occasions.
Interventions are now being made within the sub-soil in order to reduce the inclination, but there isn't really any hope or point in making the tower "vertical" as had initially been intended back in 1173. The main goal now is to make sure the tower will have as long a life as possible (and not fall over and kill anyone!).
All throughout its construction years and to this day the tower's inclination has been and still remains a source of tremendous fascination, attracting visitors and tourists from all over the globe. See it for yourself. It's wonderfully weird!
