The islands of Tremiti in the Adriatic Sea offer spectacular diving, with many small and bigger caves and grottoes - perfect for novice divers. The visibility here is superb; the waters are as clear glass. You'll see some fantastic rock formations and a wide variety of underwater flora and fauna.
The spectacular waters surrounding Tremiti are part of an underwater nature park that has been under protection since 1989. There's a protection depth of 70 metres, and in some parts, only fishing with a mask and snorkel is allowed. You'll need special permission to dive in a lot of sites in these waters, but this can usually be obtained quite easily from the local dive centres.
The main island of San Domino has been described as a peaceful oasis, even during the busy Italian summer. The best time of the year to go diving here is from April to October when the water temperatures are around 24C. A 5mm wetsuit full wetsuit should be enough to keep you comfortable. Boots are always a good idea too.
